Physical Therapy

Six months after setting out to find an answer to why big girl has a problem with drooling/not swallowing we found ourselves in physical therapy this week. At first I questioned if it was her tonsils causing the problem (which are always enlarged). The ENT said "maybe" but they are a grade '3' and should be a grade '4' to be removed. They referred us to PT.
So on appointment day this past week I woke up vomiting, little girl had had a pretty major nose bleed sometime in the night without knowing it but, by gosh, we were bathed and out of the house for big girl's PT appointment downtown at 8:30am. The therapist looked in big girl's mouth and noticed she has an abnormally high palate. She asked if big girl had been a preemie baby (don't know) or if she was ever intubated as a baby (don't know). She said that either of these things could contribute to BG's problem. She said the high palate along with the enlarged tonsils are probably structural issues working against BG but that there is also a behavioral aspect to the problem as she mainly has a problem with the drooling when she is concentrating or really interested/excited.
We came home with some exercises to try at home and the suggestion to get a "swallow bracelet" that will be a special tool to help big girl remember to swallow every time she touches/plays with it. We were also told to go back to the ENT to see about getting these tonsils out. Kinda feels like starting back at square one.
Bottom line, all doctors/professionals we have seen have said that eventually it will take care of itself when BG is old enough to be embarrassed when other kids ask/make fun of/notice this habit. Of course a momma doesn't want it to come to that though. We'll follow up as suggested.
I haven't forgotten about the new pictures. They are still stored somewhere between mine and Jonathan's computer (b/c of the computer crash). I'll get them up this week.

I am with you...don't wait until kids make fun of her. Hope PT works and getting her tonsils out is really not a big deal so if that may help it would be worth a try. Keep on keeping on. You will find the answers. You are doing a great job mom.

It sounds like you are doing the right things.

It can often be frustrating when you get the response that things will take care of themselves with time. Especially when it involves our kids, we would rather not wait.

But kids are resilient and heal well.
